Growing up I have always heard people Use statements like "be yourself," "Be true to yourself." I can probably remember hearing this statement for the first time at the age of 9 or 10. I used to ask my self what do comments like this mean? Now that I am older I realized that 90% of the people using this statement really only had a shallow misunderstanding of what it meant to be yourself. Truth is I thought it just meant not to follow others and to speak up for what you stand for. As I have grown older the meaning of this statement gotten so much more deeper.
Who Are You ?
In order for someone to be themselves, they first need to discover who they are. This Usually leads to a new question "who am I"? Notice human beings spend a majority of their lives trying to find themselves. If we were to walk down the street right now and ask 10 random people who they are half of the 10 people would not know, and the other half would probably manufacture some type of description of what they think you want to hear or wouldn't be confident in the answer they gave you.
All Up To You !
So Who Are you? That's really up to you to decide. You can be whatever you want to be. It's not about finding yourself, it's s about creating yourself. You shape who you are and then be that which you created. For example, I use to struggle with self-confidence but now that I know it's about creating yourself I created a new possibility of being confident, and I live from and be the possibility of confidence. Now every action I take and thought I think will be that of someone who is confident because that's who I am.
A little Perspective
So Back to the statement "be yourself." What I now understand 18 years later is that the statement "be yourself" really means be whatever you created yourself to be. It doesn't necessarily mean don't follow the crowd. It means to be true to what you think should be done. It means to create for yourself and think for yourself. Do what you are passionate about and what makes you happy. So who do you want to be?
Clearing The Space
Take time for yourself to sit down and get clear on the qualities you want to have and the person you want to be. Then think about the actions and the way of being that, that person would take and have. Then step out into the world be that person and take those actions. It's almost inevitable that you will start to attract the things that you've always wanted because the person you're being is a direct correlation to the results you want. Life continually gives us opportunities to cash in on the life we want. It all comes down to who we show up as in those moments. I challenge you to start showing up as the best version of you, and if this post added value to you, I encourage you to share it with someone so we can all start becoming the best version of ourselves.
